Why Centerline-Crossing Crashes Are Often Deadly
Crashes involving vehicles crossing the centerline frequently result in head-on impacts. These collisions expose drivers and passengers to strong forces because both vehicles may be traveling at full speed in opposite directions.
Even slight steering errors, fatigue, or distraction can cause a vehicle to drift into another lane. On highways without barriers, there is little to prevent vehicles from entering oncoming traffic. This increases the risk of serious or fatal injuries.
Roadway design, lighting, and driver alertness all affect safety. Staying focused and maintaining lane position helps reduce the risk of head-on crashes, especially on rural highways.
