The collision happened around midday on Sunday, April 12, near the seven-mile marker, about four miles north of Dauphin Island city limits. A 2006 Harley-Davidson Night Train motorcycle, operated by David E. Hopkins of Mobile, was hit in the rear by a 2014 Ford Flex driven by a 28-year-old woman.
Hopkins was taken to a nearby hospital following the crash, where he was later pronounced dead. The driver of the Ford Flex, identified as Kayla A. Sauer of Dixon, Missouri, was involved in the incident, though additional details about her condition were not released.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as they become available. We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.
Why Rear-End Collisions Are Especially Dangerous for Motorcyclists
Rear-end crashes involving motorcycles often lead to serious outcomes due to the lack of protection for riders. Unlike occupants of enclosed vehicles, motorcyclists are exposed, increasing the risk of severe injury during impact.
Even at moderate speeds, being struck from behind can throw a rider from the motorcycle. This can result in head injuries, fractures, or internal trauma, depending on how the rider lands and the surrounding conditions.
Road awareness and following distance are key factors in preventing these crashes. Drivers are encouraged to stay alert for motorcycles and allow extra space, especially on highways where speeds are higher and stopping distances are longer.
