Coldwater, MI (July 22, 2026) – A 31-year-old moped rider was critically injured in a crash involving a minivan on Monday night, July 20, near Marshall Road and Newton Road, according to Michigan State Police. The crash happened around 10:30 p.m. in Coldwater Township.
The moped rider was airlifted to the hospital and remained in critical condition as of early Tuesday. The minivan’s driver, 92, was not hurt.
Investigators do not believe alcohol or drugs played a role. Troopers continue to investigate what led to the crash. We hope the moped rider has a full recovery.
What Makes Moped Riders More Vulnerable in a Crash?
Mopeds offer little to no protection compared with a car, van, or truck, meaning a rider absorbs much more of the force in a collision. Even at lower speeds, this difference in size and structure can lead to serious injuries that a driver in a larger vehicle might walk away from unharmed.
Visibility is another factor. Mopeds are smaller and harder for other drivers to spot, especially at night or in low-light conditions like the one here. This can make it more difficult for a driver turning or crossing a road to judge how quickly a moped is approaching.
Helmets and reflective gear can help reduce the severity of injuries, but they don’t eliminate the size and speed mismatch between a moped and a larger vehicle. That gap is part of why moped and motorcycle crashes tend to result in more serious injuries relative to the number of vehicles involved.
