Morgan County, MO (February 21, 2026) – A multi-vehicle collision on US 50 west of Old 50 in Morgan County left two drivers injured late on Friday night. The crash occurred at approximately 9:52 p.m. on February 20 and involved four vehicles, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
Troopers reported that a westbound 2025 Nissan Altima crossed the centerline and sideswiped an eastbound 2004 Honda Odyssey. The Honda had attempted to avoid the oncoming vehicle but was still struck. The Altima then collided head-on with an eastbound 2025 Hyundai Elantra. A fourth vehicle, a 2013 Honda Accord, subsequently struck the Elantra.
The driver of the Nissan, a 61-year-old woman from Owensville, MO, suffered serious injuries and was transported by Pettis County EMS to University Hospital. The 21-year-old male driver of the Hyundai, from California, MO, sustained moderate injuries and was also taken to University Hospital.
All involved drivers were wearing seat belts. The damaged vehicles were towed from the scene.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. We are thinking of those injured as they receive medical care.
Why Multi-Vehicle Crashes Often Lead to Chain Reactions
Crashes involving more than two vehicles often unfold quickly, with each impact increasing the risk of injury and damage. When one vehicle crosses the centerline, as in this case, it can cause a cascade of collisions, especially on highways with limited separation between lanes.
Investigators typically assess how and when each vehicle was hit, whether evasive actions were possible, and how visibility or road conditions may have played a role. Even drivers not initially involved in the first impact can be caught in the aftermath.
Chain-reaction crashes like this one highlight the dangers of lane departure and how a single misjudgment can endanger multiple vehicles. Reviewing the full sequence helps clarify the crash dynamics and inform safety improvements on busy rural routes like US 50.
