Why Failure-to-Yield Crashes Are Common at Highway Intersections
Failure-to-yield crashes often occur when drivers misjudge the speed or distance of oncoming traffic while entering or crossing a highway. Even brief delays in decision-making can result in a direct collision when vehicles are traveling at higher speeds.
Intersections on rural highways can be especially challenging because sightlines may be limited and traffic may approach quickly. Drivers must often rely on careful timing to safely enter or cross these roads.
In many cases, investigators review vehicle paths, speed estimates, and roadway design to understand how the driver’s decision to enter traffic led to the crash.
