How Can Airbag Deployment Help Protect Occupants in Multi-Vehicle Impacts?
Airbags are designed to deploy during certain types of forceful contact and work together with seat belts. They can help reduce direct contact with the steering wheel, dashboard, doors, or other hard interior surfaces.
In a multi-vehicle sequence, an occupant may experience force from more than one direction. Front, side, and curtain airbags can provide different types of protection depending on the vehicle and where contact occurs.
Airbag deployment does not by itself show how severe an injury may be. Vehicle speed, seating position, restraint use, contact angle, and the number of separate impacts can all influence the physical effects on occupants. Medical evaluation may still be needed even when protective systems function as designed.
