Bettendorf, IA (September 2, 2026) – A mother and her son were injured on Tuesday morning, September 1, in a motorcycle crash near Pleasant Valley High School in Bettendorf.

According to the Scott County Sheriff’s Office, the motorcycle crashed around 7:38 a.m. after a van pulled out of the high school’s parking lot without stopping. Deputies said the van was able to stop before the vehicles collided, but the motorcycle crashed while attempting to avoid it and landed on its side.

The mother was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Her son suffered minor injuries and was also transported to a hospital, with deputies saying his injuries were not life-threatening. The van driver was cited for failure to yield upon entering a highway.

Our thoughts are with the mother and her son as they recover from their injuries. We wish both of them a full and speedy recovery.

Why Is Visibility Important for Motorcyclists?

Motorcycles are smaller than most passenger vehicles, which can make them harder for drivers to notice in heavy traffic. A motorcycle may be especially difficult to see when a driver is pulling out of a parking lot, entering a roadway, or checking for traffic from multiple directions. Taking an extra moment to scan carefully can help drivers recognize motorcycles before moving into their path.

Drivers should check mirrors and blind spots and continue watching for motorcycles after entering the roadway. Motorcyclists can improve their visibility by using headlights, maintaining a predictable position in traffic, and avoiding areas where they may be hidden by larger vehicles. Both drivers and riders benefit from leaving enough space to react when traffic conditions change unexpectedly.

School entrances and parking lots can create additional challenges because vehicles, pedestrians, buses, and bicycles may all be moving through the same area. Reduced speeds and careful observation can give everyone more time to respond to sudden movements. Paying attention to traffic flow is particularly important during busy arrival and dismissal periods.
