New York, NY (August 10, 2026) – A 5-month-old girl and her 27-year-old mother were killed after a boat overturned late on Saturday night near Liberty Island. The boat capsized at about 10:20 p.m. on August 8, sending 14 people into the water. Rescue crews responded with marine, scuba, and aviation units and pulled everyone from the water.
The victims were identified as a 5-month-old and 27-year-old Sarah Sanchez, 27, both of Queens; they were taken to NYU Langone Brooklyn in critical condition and later pronounced dead. The 12 other people rescued from the water were taken to hospitals with minor injuries. Officials identified the vessel as a 22-foot bowrider powerboat.
Manuel Hernandez, 46, of Manhattan, was arrested and charged with 13 counts of reckless endangerment. Officials are also examining whether the boat trip was operating as an illegal charter.
