How Vehicle-and-Motorcycle Crashes Are Commonly Evaluated
Motorcycle crashes often require careful review because riders have much less physical protection than those in passenger vehicles. Even at lower speeds, these types of impacts can result in serious injury from direct contact with the pavement or another vehicle.
Investigators typically examine the positions of both vehicles, traffic controls, visibility, and whether either driver was turning, changing lanes, or entering the roadway. Photos, roadway markings, and witness accounts can help establish the sequence of movements leading up to contact.
Other factors, such as lighting, weather, and traffic conditions, may also be considered during the review. As additional information becomes available, those findings can provide a clearer understanding of how the collision unfolded and the circumstances surrounding it.
