Why Motorcycle Riders Face Higher Risks in Traffic Collisions
Motorcycle riders have less physical protection than people traveling in passenger vehicles, making them more vulnerable during roadway collisions. Even at moderate speeds, riders can be thrown from the motorcycle or struck directly by another vehicle.
Highway traffic can create additional dangers because motorcycles are smaller and may be harder for drivers to notice while changing lanes or merging. Sudden stops, limited visibility, and distracted driving are also common factors reviewed after these types of crashes. Protective gear such as helmets, gloves, and reinforced jackets may help reduce the severity of injuries, though riders can still face serious harm from contact with pavement or surrounding traffic. Multi-lane highways often require quick driver decisions, increasing the chance of collisions involving motorcycles.
