What Factors Can Increase the Risk of Motorcycle Crashes on Urban Highways?
Motorcycles are more vulnerable than larger vehicles because riders have less physical protection during traffic-related emergencies. On busy urban highways, several factors can increase the likelihood of a serious crash, including heavy traffic, lane changes, limited visibility, and differences in vehicle speed.
Road design can also affect rider safety. Entrance ramps, exit ramps, and merging traffic often require motorists and riders to make quick decisions. Weather conditions, roadway debris, and pavement defects may further increase hazards for those traveling on two wheels.
Safety experts often encourage riders to wear protective gear, maintain safe following distances, and remain highly visible to surrounding traffic. Drivers can also help reduce risks by checking blind spots carefully and giving motorcycles adequate space while sharing the roadway.
