Phoenix, AZ (June 17, 2026) – A motorcyclist was killed, and another driver was hurt after a crash at Bell Road and 12th Street in north Phoenix on Sunday evening.
Police said the collision happened shortly after 5:30 p.m. when a motorcycle was involved in a crash with two other vehicles. The motorcycle caught fire following the collision, and emergency units took the rider to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Another driver involved in the crash was also taken to a hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. The motorcyclist’s name has not been released pending notification of family members.
Witnesses told police the motorcycle was traveling at a high rate of speed before striking a vehicle that was turning left onto 12th Street. The force of the collision pushed that vehicle into another car that was stopped at the traffic light.
Investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the wreck. We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the rider who passed away.
Why Left-Turn Crashes Can Be Dangerous for Motorcyclists
Left-turn crashes are a common type of intersection collision involving motorcycles. These crashes can occur when a driver turning across traffic fails to see an approaching motorcycle or misjudges the time available before turning.
Motorcycles have a smaller profile than passenger vehicles, which can make them harder to notice in certain traffic conditions. Factors such as speed, visibility, lighting, and the timing of a turn can influence how quickly a driver recognizes a motorcycle nearby.
Investigators reviewing motorcycle collisions often examine vehicle positions, roadway markings, damage patterns, and witness accounts. These details can help explain the movements of each vehicle before the collision occurred.
Intersections with heavy traffic can create complex situations for all road users. Drivers and riders must make quick decisions while sharing limited space, increasing the importance of awareness and caution.
