How Head-On Roadway Emergencies Can Create Serious Hazards
Head-on roadway emergencies can be especially dangerous because vehicles may meet from opposite directions with strong force. Even when speed is not confirmed, this type of contact can leave vehicles disabled or overturned.
A flipped vehicle can quickly block travel lanes and make the road harder to pass. Other drivers may need to slow down suddenly, stop, or wait for the route to clear. On highways with curves, narrow shoulders, or limited sight distance, a blocked lane can create added risk for approaching traffic.
Emergency units may need space to check on people, secure the vehicle, and clear debris. Until a roadway is reopened, drivers nearby should expect delays and move carefully through the affected stretch.
