Why Motorcycle Crashes With Cars Often Result in Severe Injuries
Motorcycle crashes involving passenger vehicles frequently lead to serious injuries because riders have far less physical protection than people inside enclosed vehicles. Even at moderate roadway speeds, the force of contact can throw a rider from the motorcycle and cause significant trauma.
Investigators reviewing these crashes often study vehicle positioning, braking marks, visibility, and roadway conditions to determine how the vehicles came together. Morning travel periods may also create added risks due to changing light conditions and increased commuter traffic. In severe motorcycle collisions, helicopters are sometimes used to transport injured riders quickly to regional trauma centers that can provide advanced emergency treatment.
