Breitung Township, MI (May 29, 2026) – A motorcyclist died following a collision involving a motorcycle and an SUV towing a trailer near the intersection of US-2 and Baler Dr in Breitung Township on Thursday afternoon.
According to the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office, dispatchers received multiple 911 calls regarding the crash at approximately 2:19 p.m. Preliminary findings indicate that a white SUV traveling eastbound on US-2 was preparing to turn onto Baler Dr when it crossed the path of an oncoming motorcycle traveling westbound toward the US-2 and US-141 intersection.
Investigators said the SUV, driven by a 70-year-old man from Wausaukee, Wisconsin, turned in front of the motorcycle. The motorcycle, operated by a 21-year-old man from Niagara, Wisconsin, struck the trailer being towed by the SUV.
The rider was pronounced dead at the roadway. The identity of the deceased has not been publicly released.
Investigators continue to examine the circumstances that led to the fatal collision. We extend our deepest sympathies to the motorcyclist’s family and friends during this difficult time.
Why Turning-Vehicle Crashes Pose a Significant Risk to Motorcyclists
Motorcycles can be more difficult for drivers to detect than larger vehicles, particularly at intersections where traffic is moving in multiple directions. When a driver turns across an oncoming lane, accurately judging the speed and distance of an approaching motorcycle can be challenging.
These collisions often occur when a turning driver believes there is enough time to complete a maneuver before the motorcycle arrives. Because motorcycles have a smaller profile, they may appear farther away than they actually are.
After a fatal motorcycle collision, investigators commonly review vehicle positions, roadway evidence, witness statements, and visibility conditions. They may also examine the timing of the turn and the travel paths of both vehicles. This information can help establish how the collision occurred and identify the factors that contributed to the fatal outcome.
