Why Left-Turn Motorcycle Collisions Can Be Especially Dangerous
Motorcycle crashes involving turning vehicles often result in severe harm because riders have far less protection than people inside passenger vehicles. These roadway collisions commonly happen at intersections or business entrances where drivers must judge the speed and distance of approaching traffic before turning.
Higher travel speeds can reduce reaction time for everyone involved. When a motorcycle is overtaking nearby traffic, visibility may also become limited for drivers attempting a turn. Investigators often review vehicle movement, braking evidence, witness accounts, and roadway design to better understand how the sequence unfolded.
In many cases, injuries in these crashes are more serious due to the direct exposure riders face during contact with another vehicle or the pavement.
