Grand Rapids, MI (May 24, 2026) – Two people were injured on Saturday morning, May 23, after a speeding truck pulling a trailer went through a guardrail and struck another vehicle near the interchange of Interstate 96 and US-131 in Grand Rapids.
According to preliminary information, the truck was traveling on the westbound Interstate 96 ramp to northbound US-131 when it left the roadway. Investigators said the vehicle crashed through the guardrail, crossed a grassy section, and then struck another vehicle that was also pulling a trailer on northbound US-131.
Two people were taken to a nearby hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening. Their identities were not released. State police continue reviewing the circumstances that led to the collision. We are thinking of those injured and wish them a smooth recovery.
Why Highway Ramp Speeds Can Increase the Risk of Serious Crashes
Highway ramps often require drivers to reduce speed quickly while navigating curves and merging traffic. When a vehicle enters a ramp too fast, it can become harder to maintain control, especially for trucks towing trailers. Sudden movement or shifting trailer weight may increase the chance of leaving the roadway.
Guardrails are designed to reduce the severity of roadway departures, but high-speed impacts can still lead to major damage and secondary collisions. Crashes involving trailers may also spread debris across multiple lanes, leading to extended traffic delays and cleanup work.
Investigators commonly review vehicle speed, roadway markings, and trailer positioning after these types of highway collisions. Weather, visibility, and ramp design may also provide important context during follow-up reviews.
