Mount Prospect, IL (September 14, 2026) – A 31-year-old motorcyclist was killed on Saturday, September 12, after colliding with a Jeep SUV at the intersection of Oakton Street and First Avenue in Mount Prospect.

Mount Prospect police said officers responded shortly after 8 p.m. to a report of a serious crash. Officers found the motorcyclist, identified as Daniel Nikov of Des Plaines, in the roadway and began life-saving measures.

The Mount Prospect Fire Department transported Nikov to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where he was pronounced dead. Police said the motorcyclist was traveling westbound on Oakton Street toward First Avenue when the Jeep exited First Avenue and turned left onto eastbound Oakton Street, resulting in the collision.

The 19-year-old Carpentersville man driving the Jeep was also taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Oakton Street was closed between Badger Road and Higgins Road and reopened around 1:45 a.m.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family, friends, and loved ones of Daniel Nikov. We also wish the Jeep driver a full and speedy recovery from his injuries.

How Can Left-Turning Vehicles and Motorcycles Avoid Crashes?

Left turns can create serious conflicts when a turning vehicle crosses the path of an approaching motorcycle. Motorists should carefully check for motorcycles before beginning a turn and continue scanning the roadway throughout the maneuver. A motorcycle’s smaller size can make it harder to judge its distance and speed.

Motorcyclists can reduce risk by maintaining a controlled speed and remaining alert for vehicles preparing to turn. Positioning within a lane can also affect visibility, particularly when approaching intersections with multiple lanes or turning movements. Riders should anticipate that a driver may not see them and leave enough space to respond if a vehicle enters their path.

Drivers and riders both benefit from avoiding distractions near intersections. Checking mirrors and blind spots, following traffic signals, and allowing enough time to complete a turn can help prevent dangerous conflicts. Consistent attention is especially important when traffic is moving in several directions at once.
