Why U-Turn Crashes Can Be Especially Dangerous for Motorcyclists
U-turn collisions often create serious risks for motorcyclists because motorcycles are smaller and can be harder for drivers to judge in traffic. When a vehicle turns across lanes or changes direction suddenly, riders may have little time to slow down or avoid contact. Even with protective gear, riders can be thrown long distances due to the lack of external protection around a motorcycle.
Road speed also affects the severity of these crashes. On major highways or multi-lane roads, motorcycles may approach much faster than drivers expect while turning. Visibility at night can make timing and distance even more difficult to judge. Investigators reviewing these types of cases often examine vehicle movement, lighting, speed, and driver visibility to determine better how the roadway sequence unfolded.
