Somerset, KY (June 12, 2026) –The Kentucky State Police is investigating the death of a motorcyclist and a woman who was injured following a two-vehicle crash involving a motorcycle and an SUV in Somerset on Wednesday evening, June 10.
Emergency units responded to Clifty Hill Road near the intersection with Wilson Road at around 6 p.m. According to the Police, a Volkswagen Atlas driven northbound by Shelby Crawford, 32, was attempting a left turn onto Wilson Road when the crash occurred.
At the same time, a motorcycle driven southbound by 34-year-old Nathan Grider of Somerset was reportedly traveling at a high rate of speed and struck the front passenger side of the SUV. Grider was transported to Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead by the Pulaski County Coroner’s Office.
Crawford was also taken to a hospital following the crash and has since been released. Authorities said impairment is not believed to be a factor, though toxicology results are still pending. This is a developing story. We extend our sympathy to those mourning the loss of Grider.
What Factors Are Often Reviewed in Motorcycle vs. SUV Collisions?
Crashes involving motorcycles and passenger vehicles mostly require detailed reconstruction because both vehicles respond differently during impact. Investigators typically examine speed, turning movements, right-of-way decisions, and lane positioning to determine how the collision occurred.
In many cases, visibility, reaction time, and roadway design also play key roles. Left-turn crashes are especially common when one vehicle crosses the path of oncoming traffic. Evidence such as skid marks, vehicle damage patterns, and witness statements can help establish how fast each vehicle was traveling and who had the right of way. These details are used to build a clearer understanding of the sequence of events leading up to the crash.
