Why Intersections Are Common Sites for Motorcycle Crashes
Intersections are among the most frequent locations for motorcycle-related traffic crashes. These areas bring together vehicles traveling in different directions, increasing the number of potential points of conflict. Drivers turning left, changing lanes, or entering cross traffic may have difficulty noticing an approaching motorcycle, particularly at night or during periods of heavy traffic.
Motorcycles are smaller than most passenger vehicles, which can make them harder to detect from a distance. Speed perception can also be challenging, leading other road users to misjudge how quickly a motorcycle approaches an intersection.
Roadway design, traffic signals, visibility, and driver attention can all influence safety at intersections. Riders frequently reduce risk by maintaining visibility, wearing reflective gear, and anticipating the actions of surrounding drivers. Even so, the combination of crossing traffic and turning movements continues to make intersections one of the most challenging environments for motorcycle travel.
