Why Identifying People After Bicycle Crashes Can Take Time
After a serious bicycle crash, investigators mostly work to confirm the identity of the person involved before notifying relatives. This process may include reviewing personal belongings, checking nearby surveillance footage, and speaking with witnesses who may have seen the rider before the crash occurred. In some cases, identification can take longer when the person is unconscious or does not have identification with them.
Photos of bicycles or personal items are sometimes released publicly to help generate leads. Medical teams may also document clothing, equipment, and physical descriptions while identification efforts continue. Information gathered during the early stages can help clarify what happened and assist with communication between hospitals and family members once an identity is confirmed.
