What Factors Can Affect Injury Severity in Motorcycle Crashes?
Motorcycle crashes may result in more serious injuries than other roadway incidents because riders have less physical protection. Even when a helmet is worn, a person can still experience significant trauma depending on speed, vehicle movement, and the point of contact.
Several factors may influence the extent of injuries. These include roadway design, lighting conditions, traffic volume, visibility, and whether protective gear is used. The type and size of the other vehicle involved can also affect the outcome. In many cases, medical assessments continue after a person arrives at a hospital because some injuries are not immediately apparent.
Investigators and safety experts often review vehicle positions, roadway evidence, witness statements, and other available information to better understand how a motorcycle crash occurred and why injuries may have been severe.
