Why Are Motorcycles More Vulnerable in Nighttime Crashes?
Motorcycles can be harder to see at night compared to larger vehicles. Their smaller size and single headlight may make it difficult for drivers to judge distance or speed, especially on dark or winding roads. This can increase the risk of a crash when vehicles turn or change lanes.
Road conditions also affect nighttime riding. Reduced visibility, limited lighting, and curves can make it harder for both riders and drivers to react quickly. Even a brief delay in noticing a motorcycle can lead to a serious impact.
Protective gear and awareness are key factors in reducing harm. Helmets, reflective clothing, and proper lighting on the motorcycle can improve visibility. At the same time, drivers are expected to check carefully for oncoming motorcycles before making turns.
