How Train and Vehicle Crashes Occur at Railroad Crossings
Crashes between trains and vehicles often happen at railroad crossings where drivers must decide when it is safe to pass. These areas may have signals, gates, or only basic signage, depending on the location.
Trains travel at high speeds and require a long distance to come to a complete stop. Even if a train operator sees a vehicle on the tracks, stopping in time may not be possible. This makes timing and driver awareness especially significant at crossings.
Visibility can also affect these incidents. Curves in the track, weather conditions, or blocked views may limit how early a train or crossing can be seen. Drivers are expected to slow down, check for signals, and look both ways before crossing tracks.
