Nashville, TN (May 21, 2026) – A multi-vehicle collision blocked several southbound lanes on Interstate 65 early on Thursday morning in Nashville. The roadway disruption happened near mile marker 86.6 in Davidson County at about 5:37 a.m.
Reports showed that two of the three southbound lanes were closed, along with the exit ramp and shoulder. Injuries were reported following the crash. Traffic moved slowly through the corridor while emergency units worked near the roadway.
Crews continued clearing the highway during the morning commute as delays built up through the southbound lanes. Additional details about the accident had not been released as of Thursday morning, although investigators continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding the roadway collision.

Why Multi-Vehicle Pileups Usually Cause Major Traffic Delays
Crashes involving several vehicles can create long backups even when only part of a highway is blocked. On busy interstates, drivers have limited time to slow down or change lanes safely, especially during early morning travel periods. Heavy traffic volume and reduced visibility can also make chain-reaction crashes more likely.
After a roadway blockage, crews usually work to move disabled vehicles, remove debris, and reopen lanes as quickly as possible. Traffic congestion may continue even after lanes reopen because vehicles remain backed up for miles. Drivers approaching these areas are advised to reduce speed and leave extra following distance. Delays can become more severe near exit ramps and merge points where traffic flow narrows suddenly.
