How Multi-Vehicle Collisions Occur at Intersections
Multi-vehicle roadway events often begin at intersections where several traffic streams cross paths. Drivers are expected to follow signals or stop signs, but mistakes or missed signals can lead to sudden changes in traffic flow. When one vehicle enters an intersection unexpectedly, other drivers may have little time to adjust their speed or direction. This can cause a chain reaction involving more than two vehicles, especially during busy travel hours.
Intersections with stop signs require extra attention because vehicles approach from different directions. Even a brief distraction can affect how a driver perceives other traffic. Roadway design, visibility, and speed also influence how quickly drivers can react. In many cases, investigators review timing, vehicle positions, and roadway conditions to better understand how events unfolded and how similar situations might be reduced in the future.
