How Highway Emergencies on Interstates Are Managed
Highway emergencies on interstates may require coordinated efforts from emergency units, especially when multiple people are involved, and traffic must be controlled quickly. Medical helicopters are sometimes used when rapid hospital access is needed for seriously hurt people, particularly when road access is limited or delayed.
Communication between ground crews and air medical teams helps prioritize transport decisions. Fire crews may also perform extrication when passengers are trapped inside damaged vehicles. Traffic closures are common while debris is cleared and vehicles are removed from the roadway. Medical teams may later review roadway conditions, vehicle positions, and witness accounts to clarify how circumstances developed to improve future safety planning.
