Two vehicles were involved in the collision. Preliminary information indicated the pedestrian entered the roadway outside of a marked crossing area while attempting to cross Cheyenne Ave. How the second vehicle became involved was not disclosed.
Both drivers stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Authorities found no indication that either driver was impaired at the time of the crash. The pedestrian remained in critical condition as of the time the original report was published.
Authorities continue to investigate the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. Our thoughts are with the pedestrian and their family during this difficult time.
What Are the Risks of Crossing Outside a Marked Crosswalk in Nevada?
Nevada law requires pedestrians to use marked crosswalks or intersections when crossing a roadway wherever they are reasonably available. Crossing outside of a designated area — sometimes called jaywalking — places a pedestrian in a part of the road where drivers are less likely to expect foot traffic, which reduces the time both sides have to react. At early morning hours when visibility is lower, that risk increases significantly.
Drivers in Nevada are still required to exercise reasonable care to avoid hitting pedestrians, even when a pedestrian is crossing outside a marked area. However, the circumstances of where and how a pedestrian entered the roadway can factor into how an incident is reviewed. Urban intersections with high vehicle speeds and low lighting are among the most common settings for serious pedestrian crashes in the state.
