Nashville, TN (April 20, 2026) – A crash involving a tanker truck and a passenger vehicle shut down eastbound lanes of Interstate 40 near mile marker 192 on Sunday, April 19, not long after 3 p.m. The incident occurred near McCrory Ln, close to the border of Davidson and Cheatham counties.
Two people were taken to the hospital following the collision. Their conditions have not been confirmed.
The eastbound lane closures caused significant delays for drivers in the area throughout the afternoon. The scene was expected to clear by 7 p.m., and by 6:40 p.m. the incident had been removed from the state’s traffic monitoring system, indicating all lanes had reopened.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as they become available. We are thinking of those injured as they receive medical care.
What Drivers in Tennessee Should Know About Tanker Truck Crashes on Interstates
Crashes involving tanker trucks on Tennessee interstates can be more complex to manage than typical vehicle collisions. Depending on what a tanker is carrying, responders may need to assess whether hazardous materials are involved before clearing the scene. This can extend road closure times well beyond what a standard crash would require.
Interstate 40 is one of the busiest freight corridors in the state, and the stretch near Davidson and Cheatham counties sees regular commercial truck traffic. When a large commercial vehicle is involved in a crash, the weight and size of the truck often cause more significant damage to other vehicles. Extended lane closures on high-traffic interstates like I-40 can create backups that stretch for miles, affecting drivers far from the actual scene.
