Neosho, MO (February 21, 2026) – A motorcyclist was killed and another driver injured in a two-vehicle crash late on Friday night on Jasmine Dr, approximately 3 miles northwest of Neosho in Newton County. The incident occurred at 11:47 p.m. on February 20, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
Authorities say a 1999 Mazda B-Series pickup, driven by a 23-year-old man from Neosho, ran off the right side of the road before re-entering the lane and striking an eastbound Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle. Both vehicles were severely damaged and towed from the scene.
The 23-year-old male motorcyclist, also from Neosho, was transported to Mercy Hospital in Joplin, where he was later pronounced dead. The driver of the pickup sustained minor injuries and was also treated at Mercy Hospital.
Both drivers were reported to have been wearing safety equipment. The crash marked the ninth fatality for Troop D in 2026.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.
Why Motorcyclists Face Greater Risks in Rural Collisions
Crashes involving motorcycles often result in more severe outcomes than those involving passenger vehicles. With little protection beyond a helmet and gear, motorcyclists are vulnerable even in low-speed or single-impact collisions.
In rural areas like those surrounding Neosho, narrow roads and limited lighting can increase crash risk, especially when a vehicle unexpectedly leaves the roadway and reenters traffic. Investigators typically assess factors such as road surface, vehicle trajectory, and timing of the impact to determine fault and prevent future incidents.
This crash highlights the importance of maintaining control, especially on curved or rural roads where reaction time is limited. Public awareness and continued rider safety education can help reduce the number of motorcycle fatalities statewide.
