Frequently Asked Questions
Does speed make a difference in how bad a crash is? Yes. Higher speeds give drivers less time to react and increase the force involved in a collision, which tends to mean more severe injuries and vehicle damage.
Why is distracted driving considered so risky? Taking your eyes off the road for even a few seconds, such as to glance at a phone, means traveling a significant distance without seeing hazards ahead, especially at highway speeds.
How do weather and road conditions factor into crashes like this one? Rain, fog, darkness, and uneven pavement can all reduce visibility and traction, making it harder for drivers, especially those operating large trucks, to stop or maneuver safely.
What should someone do right after a car accident? Move to a safe location if possible, check for injuries, call 911, and exchange information with the other driver. Even if injuries aren't immediately obvious, it's wise to seek a medical evaluation afterward.
What to Do After a Car Accident in New Berlin, Illinois
If you're involved in a crash on a highway like this one, try to move your vehicle out of traffic lanes if it's safe to do so, and turn on hazard lights. Call 911 right away and wait for law enforcement to arrive and document the scene. Even minor aches or stiffness can signal an injury that isn't obvious right away, so getting checked by a medical provider is a good idea. Keep a copy of any police report and hold onto photos of the scene, vehicle damage, and any visible injuries. Taking these steps early can make it easier to sort out insurance claims and follow-up care in the days after a crash.
