Why Nighttime Intersection Closures Can Affect Driver Safety
Nighttime intersection closures can create sudden changes for drivers. Lanes may be blocked, traffic signals may be harder to see, and vehicles may need to merge or turn with little warning.
When several vehicles are involved, crews often need extra room to check on people, clear debris, and reopen travel lanes safely. This can lead to temporary closures even when injuries are not life-threatening.
Low light can also make it harder for approaching drivers to judge distance and speed. Glare from headlights, unfamiliar detours, and late-night fatigue can add to the risk. Slowing down early and watching for stopped traffic can help drivers move through the roadway safely.
