How Are Occupants Safely Removed From Overturned Vehicles?
When a vehicle overturns, rescue efforts require specialized techniques to protect the people inside. Emergency personnel first work to stabilize the vehicle so it does not shift during the operation. This helps reduce the risk of additional harm while access is gained to the passenger compartment.
In some cases, standard doors cannot be opened because of structural damage or the vehicle’s position. Crews may then use hydraulic tools and other equipment to remove portions of the vehicle, including the roof, to create a safe path for extraction. These methods are designed to minimize movement and help protect anyone who may have neck, back, or other injuries.
After a person is removed, medical teams evaluate their condition and determine what treatment may be needed. The severity of injuries can vary widely, even in crashes that initially appear minor, making thorough assessment an important part of post-crash care.
