How Mechanical Problems Can Contribute to Motorcycle Accidents
Mechanical failures on motorcycles can create dangerous situations, especially when riders are traveling in groups or at highway speeds. Problems involving tires, brakes, engines, or other critical parts may cause a rider to suddenly lose control with little warning. When motorcycles travel close together, nearby riders often have very little time to avoid a fallen bike.
Highway motorcycle crashes can become more severe because riders have less physical protection than occupants of passenger vehicles. Investigators examining these accidents may review maintenance records, roadway conditions, vehicle damage, and witness accounts to determine the cause of the initial loss of control. In group riding situations, spacing between motorcycles and traffic conditions may also help explain how secondary impacts occurred after the first motorcycle went down.
