Frequently Asked Questions
Where do most pedestrian crashes happen?
A large share occur on roadways without sidewalks or marked crosswalks, especially where pedestrians must walk along or near active travel lanes, as on stretches of highway.
Are pedestrian crashes more likely at night?
Yes. Reduced visibility after dark makes it harder for drivers to see people walking along or crossing roads, which raises the risk compared with daytime hours.
What should a pedestrian do after being hit by a vehicle?
Call 911 immediately, stay as still as possible until help arrives, and seek medical evaluation even if injuries seem minor, since some injuries are not immediately obvious.
Who has the right of way at a crosswalk?
In most states, pedestrians have the right of way once they have entered a marked or unmarked crosswalk, though drivers and walkers both have a duty to watch for each other.
