Frequently Asked Questions
What injuries are most common for cyclists hit by vehicles?
Cyclists often suffer broken bones, head and neck injuries, and road rash from being thrown from the bike. Even at low speeds, the lack of protection around a rider means injuries can be serious.
What typically causes car-bicycle collisions?
Common factors include drivers failing to see a cyclist, turning or merging without checking bike lanes, speeding, and distracted driving. Poor lighting or visibility can also play a role in early morning or nighttime crashes.
Where do most of these collisions happen?
Many car-bicycle crashes occur at intersections, driveways, and spots where a cyclist is merging with or crossing vehicle traffic.
What is "dooring" and why is it dangerous?
Dooring happens when someone in a parked car opens a door into the path of an oncoming cyclist, often with little or no time for the rider to react. It's a common cause of injury in areas with roadside parking near bike lanes.
What to Do After a Bicycle Accident in North Charleston, SC
If you're involved in a crash while riding, try to move to a safe spot and call for medical help even if injuries seem minor. Some injuries, especially to the head or joints, aren't obvious right away and are worth having checked by a doctor.
Make sure to get the names and contact information of anyone involved, including witnesses, and ask for a copy of the police report once it's filed. Photos of the scene, your bike, and any visible injuries can help later if questions come up about how the crash happened.
