North Codorus Township, PA (March 12, 2026) – A man lost his life after a head-on crash involving a pickup truck and a tractor-trailer early on Thursday morning, March 12, in North Codorus Township.
Emergency units responded around 6:35 a.m. to the 1700 block of Seven Valleys Rd after reports of a serious collision. Authorities said a 2025 Ford F-150 was traveling north when it crossed into the southbound lane for unknown reasons.
The pickup then struck a 2024 Volvo tractor-trailer that was traveling south on the roadway. The truck driver, a 55-year-old man from Toledo, was reportedly heading to Shrewsbury to pick up a load of eggs at the time of the crash.
The driver of the Ford pickup was identified as 61-year-old John Gross of Glenville. A deputy coroner responded to the scene and pronounced him dead.
Officials said the tractor-trailer driver cooperated with investigators as they worked to determine what caused the pickup to cross into the opposite lane. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as they are provided.
We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.
Why Head-On Crashes on Rural Roads Can Be Especially Dangerous
Head-on crashes often happen when a vehicle crosses the center line and enters the path of oncoming traffic. These incidents can occur for several reasons, including driver fatigue, distraction, medical issues, or brief loss of vehicle control.
Rural roads frequently have higher speed limits and fewer physical barriers separating directions of travel. Without a median or guardrail, a small steering error or momentary lapse can place a vehicle directly into opposing traffic. Narrow shoulders and curves can also make recovery more difficult once a vehicle drifts from its lane.
When two vehicles collide front-to-front, the combined force of their speeds can create a severe impact. Because of this, head-on crashes are among the most serious types of roadway collisions and often lead to life-threatening injuries or fatalities.
