Frequently Asked Questions
What makes a vehicle roll over?
A rollover typically happens when a vehicle loses traction and its tires catch on pavement, a curb, or soft ground while the vehicle is turning or sliding sideways, causing it to tip. Taller vehicles with a higher center of gravity, like SUVs and trucks, are more prone to this than low sedans.
Are some roads more likely to see rollovers than others?
Rural roads with sharp curves, narrow shoulders, and no barriers see more rollovers than divided highways, partly because there's less room to correct if a vehicle drifts off the pavement.
What injuries commonly result from a rollover crash?
Occupants can suffer head and spinal injuries, broken bones, and internal injuries, especially if they are not wearing a seat belt and are thrown from the vehicle during the rollover.
Does wearing a seat belt matter in a rollover?
Yes. Seat belts keep occupants inside the vehicle and reduce the chance of being ejected, which is one of the most serious risks in a rollover crash.
What to Do After a Rollover Crash in North Platte, Nebraska
If you or someone you know is involved in a rollover crash, call 911 right away, even if injuries aren't immediately obvious. Adrenaline can mask pain from broken bones or internal injuries, so anyone involved should be checked by medical personnel at the scene or at a hospital soon after. Stay as still as possible until paramedics arrive if you suspect a back or neck injury. Once everyone is safe, get a copy of the official crash report from the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office for insurance and records purposes, and follow up with your own doctor in the days afterward, since some injuries take time to show symptoms.
