OMAHA, Douglas County, Neb., Oct. 23, 2026 — A woman from Osmond died and a man was seriously hurt on Wednesday, October 21, after a pickup and a tractor collided near Highway 20 and 542nd Avenue in Pierce County. The man injured in the crash was later flown to Omaha for treatment.
The crash was reported shortly after 11:30 a.m. A 2021 Toyota Tacoma, driven by a 47-year-old Osmond woman, was headed east on Highway 20 and attempting to pass an eastbound John Deere tractor towing a grain cart. The tractor was turning left onto 542nd Avenue when the pickup struck its front tire. The pickup then lost control and rolled several times.
Both occupants of the pickup were thrown from the vehicle. Lohrberg said the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Her passenger, a 45-year-old man also from Osmond, was first taken by ambulance to Osmond General Hospital, then flown to the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha for further treatment. Neither occupant had been wearing a seat belt, according to the release.
The tractor's operator, a 44-year-old Lincoln man, was not hurt. Multiple agencies responded, including the Pierce County Sheriff's Office, the Nebraska State Patrol, Plainview Police Department, Osmond Volunteer Fire and Rescue, Plainview Fire and Rescue, LifeNet and the Nebraska Department of Transportation. The crash remains under investigation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does seat belt use matter so much?
A seat belt keeps a person inside the vehicle during a rollover or sudden impact, which lowers the chance of being thrown out and struck by the vehicle or the ground. Ejection greatly increases the risk of fatal injury in a crash like this one.
What should families do after a fatal crash?
It helps to request the official crash report once it's released, keep records of any communication with investigators, and reach out to the responding agency with questions about next steps. Many families also find it useful to consult a local victim-services program for support.
How are fatal crashes investigated?
Investigators typically document the scene, measure skid marks and vehicle damage, interview witnesses, and review any available data to reconstruct how the collision happened. Multiple agencies may be involved, especially in crashes on state highways.
How long do fatal-crash investigations take?
Timelines vary widely. Some cases are resolved in a few weeks, while others involving reconstruction or toxicology results can take several months before a final report is issued.
What to Do After a Pickup-Tractor Crash in Pierce County, Nebraska
Rural highway crashes involving farm equipment sometimes happen fast and without warning, especially during harvest season when slow-moving vehicles share the road with regular traffic. If you're involved in or witness a crash like this, call 911 immediately and stay clear of traffic lanes if it's safe to do so. Even if injuries seem minor at first, it's wise to get checked by a medical professional, since symptoms from a rollover or ejection can take hours to appear. Take photos of the scene if you're able, note the exact location and time, and get contact information for any witnesses. Afterward, follow up with the responding agency, in this case Pierce County authorities, to obtain a copy of the official report once it becomes available. Residents near Pierce County can also reach out to local hospitals or support services if they need help coping with the aftermath of a serious crash.
