OAKLAND, Alameda County, Calif., Nov. 1, 2026 — A multi-vehicle crash on eastbound Interstate 580 at the Grand Avenue off-ramp left at least one person injured on Saturday evening, October 31, and sent one vehicle up in flames, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash was first reported around 6:20 p.m. as a collision involving a blue Toyota Prius and a silver SUV blocking the right lane. Additional callers described a brown Chevrolet SUV striking the left-hand wall and swerving to the right before the wreck came to rest in the slow lane. A nearby resident told dispatchers three vehicles were involved and that one had caught fire.
One person reported a knee injury, and an ambulance was requested. A woman trapped in a tan Trailblazer with her dog was also reported to callers, though she was later able to get out of the vehicle on her own; an Oakland police officer was on scene, and Oakland Fire was dispatched but then canceled from that portion of the call. The vehicle fire, which crews said was coming from under the hood, was knocked down using four fire extinguishers before Oakland firefighters confirmed it was out.
The crash shut down multiple lanes on eastbound 580 for more than an hour as Caltrans crews worked to free a vehicle whose front tire and axle had become lodged in the guardrail near Grand Avenue, with part of the vehicle hanging over the railing above MacArthur Boulevard. All lanes had reopened by around 7:43 p.m., though two lanes of MacArthur Boulevard between Grand Avenue and Lakeshore Avenue remained closed afterward. One vehicle was later stored by Alameda police to clear the scene.
The CHP has not released information on how the crash began or whether impairment or speed played a role, and the investigation remains open.
We hope those who were hurt recover fully and quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do if I'm stopped in traffic near a highway crash?
Stay in your vehicle with your seatbelt on unless there's an immediate danger like fire or smoke, turn on hazard lights, and watch your mirrors for vehicles approaching from behind that may not slow in time.
How does reduced visibility contribute to pile-ups?
Smoke, fog, darkness, or glare can cut the distance a driver has to react, making it harder to see slowed or stopped traffic ahead until it's too late to stop safely.
Why does following distance matter so much on freeways?
Leaving more space between vehicles gives drivers extra time to brake or steer around a sudden slowdown, which can prevent a single crash from becoming a chain-reaction pile-up.
What are common injuries in multi-vehicle freeway crashes?
Occupants can suffer impact injuries to the knees, chest, or head from sudden braking or collision, along with whiplash-type neck and back injuries.
