Ocala, FL (January 2, 2026) – A devastating wrong-way crash involving a recreational vehicle and an SUV claimed the life of a 5-year-old boy and left more than a dozen others injured just two days after Christmas. The Florida Highway Patrol reported the crash occurred on Saturday morning along US-27 in Ocala amid thick fog and low visibility conditions.

The young victim, identified as Tucker Sandlin of Springfield, Ohio, was tragically pronounced dead at the scene. Tucker had been riding in the RV with 14 others, all from Ohio, when the vehicle, traveling the wrong way on US-27, collided with an SUV driven by a 25-year-old pregnant woman, Josie NesSmith.

Authorities believe dense fog played a significant role in the crash, reducing visibility and increasing the risk of head-on collisions. The SUV driver was 33 weeks pregnant at the time and was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Though doctors attempted an emergency delivery, the unborn child did not survive.

Josie NesSmith remains hospitalized with serious injuries, including a shattered femur and the loss of her spleen. A GoFundMe campaign launched by loved ones is raising funds to support her long recovery and assist in caring for her 9-month-old son during this difficult time.

Eleven individuals in the RV sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Nearby residents say the area where the crash occurred is a known danger zone. Resident Belinda Copen noted that collisions are common at the intersection and has called for improved signage and rumble strips, stating, “One day, somebody is going to come out of that road, and they’re going to hit somebody. That day was today.”

We extend our deepest condolences to the Sandlin family and all others affected by this heartbreaking tragedy. Our thoughts are also with Josie NesSmith and her family as they navigate the long road to healing.

Tragic Outcomes and Highway Dangers in Florida

The deadly crash on US-27 near Ocala underscores the tragic consequences that can result from wrong-way driving, especially under low-visibility conditions like fog. Despite Florida’s efforts to improve highway safety, incidents involving RVs and large passenger vehicles can quickly escalate due to their size, weight, and the number of occupants.

Wrong-way collisions are among the most deadly types of crashes. On highways like US-27, where speeds are high and directional awareness is critical, even a momentary lapse, exacerbated by weather, can have irreversible outcomes.

This incident also highlights a growing safety concern in rural and suburban intersections. Residents have noted repeated accidents in the same location, with calls for better signage, new rumble strips, or lighting improvements to prevent further tragedy.

Families involved in these types of accidents often face overwhelming grief, physical trauma, and financial strain, from funeral costs and medical bills to extended recovery periods. Children, expectant mothers, and families traveling long distances are especially vulnerable in high-impact crashes like this one.
