Why Crashes Involving Emergency Vehicles Receive Extra Review
Crashes involving police vehicles often require detailed investigation because emergency vehicles may be operating under different traffic conditions than surrounding drivers. Investigators typically review vehicle movement, traffic signals, and whether emergency lights or sirens were active at the time.
Intersections are common locations for these crashes due to crossing traffic and changing right-of-way patterns. Even low-speed impacts can result in injuries because of the angles involved and the force transferred during a collision.
Investigators may also examine witness statements, roadway evidence, and nearby surveillance footage to reconstruct how the crash occurred. When one of the drivers is taken into custody, additional factors may become part of the ongoing review.
