Memphis, TN (May 25, 2026) – A three-vehicle crash involving a police patrol car left three people hospitalized Saturday evening in East Memphis. The wreck took place around 6 p.m. at the intersection of Poplar Ave and Prescott St.
According to Memphis police, the officer involved was answering a call when the patrol vehicle went through a red light without sirens activated. Investigators later determined the officer caused the collision and issued a citation for the traffic violation.
Three people, including the officer, were taken to local hospitals following the accident. Police said all were expected to recover. The department did not release the officer’s name, and additional information about the vehicles involved was not immediately available.
Further review into the circumstances surrounding the crash is still underway. We hope those hurt in the Memphis roadway incident make a full recovery.
Why Red Lights Can Be Especially Dangerous at Busy Intersections
Busy intersections may carry traffic from several directions at once, leaving little time for drivers to react when another vehicle enters against a signal. Crashes tied to red-light violations can involve multiple vehicles because cross traffic may already be moving at full speed when the other driver enters the intersection.
Emergency vehicles responding to calls can add another layer of risk, especially if warning lights or sirens are not fully activated. Drivers nearby may not realize an emergency vehicle is approaching until moments before contact occurs. In many urban corridors, intersections with heavy evening traffic tend to see more severe roadway accidents because of congestion, turning vehicles, and limited reaction time. Traffic investigators commonly review signal timing, witness statements, vehicle positions, and surveillance footage to better understand how these types of crashes unfold.
