Ohio State Highway Patrol crash reports are ordered online through the Patrol’s Crash Ordering System, where a report costs $4.00 once at least seven business days have passed since the crash.

It is important to note that the system covers only crashes that troopers investigated.

Did a Trooper Handle Your Crash? Check Before You Order

The Ohio State Highway Patrol keeps complete crash reports and crash photographs from crashes it investigated, and only those. According to the Patrol’s records guide, its complete reports can include witness statements.

You should look at any card or paperwork the officer gave you at the scene. It usually names the agency that took the report.

If a city police officer or a county deputy responded instead, the Patrol’s system will not have your report. In that case, contact the department that came to the scene and ask how it releases crash reports.

Ordering Ohio State Highway Patrol Crash Reports Online, Step by Step

The whole order happens in your browser. Here is the sequence the Patrol describes.

  1. Wait at least seven business days from the date of the crash, so the initial report has time to be completed. Crashes that need further investigation may have details that are not ready until that work ends.
  2. Check your setup. You need a web browser that runs JavaScript, a valid credit card and a viewer that can open PDF files.
  3. Open the ordering system. On the Patrol’s Public Records and Reports Request page, choose the link to order an OSHP crash report or photos online.
  4. Pick what you need. You can order the report alone, photos alone, or both, with photos sent by download or on DVD.
  5. Complete the purchase. You must finish checkout to receive a copy, and a service fee may be added depending on how you pay.
  6. Save your copy right away. The report is ready once your purchase is confirmed, and you can print or download it for up to 72 hours.

What an OSHP Report or Photo Set Costs in Ohio

Prices depend on whether you want photos and how you want them delivered. The table below uses the Patrol’s own price list.

What you order Price How it reaches you
Crash report only $4.00 each Online, ready to print or download for up to 72 hours
Crash photos only, download $4.00 per crash Photo link, which expires 14 days after it is sent
Crash photos only, DVD $12.00 per report DVD by mail, allow 4 to 6 weeks

Card, Google Pay and PayPal payments carry a 1.95% service fee with a $1.75 minimum. Commercial cards carry a 3.95% fee with the same minimum.

Choosing between download and DVD comes down to speed and certification. Downloaded photos arrive as a link, so allow 24 to 48 hours to receive it.

DVD orders take 4 to 6 weeks by mail, but they are the only way to get certified photos. The Patrol will not certify photos unless you select DVD as the delivery method.

Why Some Details Are Blacked Out on Ohio Crash Reports

Every online buyer receives a redacted copy after the purchase is processed. The Patrol’s customer notice explains that certain private information is routinely removed because it is not a public record under Ohio law. That includes:

  • Driver’s license numbers
  • Telephone numbers of the people involved in the crash
  • Confidential law enforcement investigatory records
  • Home and family details of dedicated public service workers
  • Personal information of a juvenile in a school vehicle crash

The Patrol points to form OHP 0413 for requests for specific unredacted records. A parent or guardian requesting records about a student in a school vehicle crash also uses that form.

Ohio Contacts When Online Ordering Does Not Work for You

Ordering online does not suit everyone. If you cannot order online, the Patrol asks you to contact its Central Records Unit for assistance at (614) 466-3536.

You can also reach Central Records through these channels:

  • Email: [email protected]
  • Mail: Ohio State Highway Patrol, Central Records, P.O. Box 182074, Columbus, OH 43218-2074
  • Fax: (614) 644-9749

Reports and photos are kept for a five-year period, so an older crash may no longer be on file. Our free police report request form is another option when you would like help with the paperwork. For broader state support, visit our Ohio accident resources page.
