Sudden Driver Incapacitation Can Create Immediate Roadway Hazards
A sudden medical problem can affect consciousness, vision, coordination, or the ability to control a vehicle. When symptoms begin while someone is entering a busy road, there may be very little time to stop or correct the vehicle’s path.
Other motorists may also have limited time to recognize that something is wrong. A vehicle entering from a driveway can move directly into through traffic, where approaching drivers may already be traveling at roadway speed and have little room to maneuver.
The outcome can depend on vehicle speed, distance, traffic flow, and how quickly surrounding drivers recognize the developing hazard. Medical emergencies are not always predictable, and determining whether one occurred may require information beyond what is immediately visible at the roadway.
