Southbound Interstate 35 remained closed at 11 p.m. The highway was expected to stay closed for several more hours while work continued along the roadway. The circumstances remain under investigation.

Why Can Fatal Motorcycle Collisions Require Lengthy Highway Closures?
A serious motorcycle wreck may leave debris and vehicles spread across multiple parts of a highway. Investigators may need to document final positions, roadway marks, and other physical evidence before lanes can safely reopen.
Motorcycles are smaller than passenger vehicles, and riders have little surrounding protection during contact. Severe outcomes may occur even when the motorcycle itself occupies relatively little roadway space after the initial impact.
Long closures can also provide room for medical activity, vehicle removal, debris cleanup, and detailed roadway measurements. Interstate traffic may need to be diverted until those tasks are complete and the travel lanes are considered safe for approaching motorists.
