Spring, TX (July 21, 2026) – One person died, and 13 others were hurt after an apartment fire early on Monday at the Cypresswood Apartments on Cypresswood Drive near Kuykendahl in the Spring area.

The fire began before 2 a.m. A 3-year-old boy was rescued from the burning building by his father, who carried the child to safety before both were taken to hospitals in critical condition. The child was flown to Shriners Hospital’s burn unit, while the father received treatment for burn injuries.

A man who was trapped inside the building was removed after crews worked to reach him. He received CPR before being taken to a hospital, where he later lost his life. He was identified as 40-year-old Andrew Atwater.

Investigators determined the fire had been intentionally set. Detectives said Matthew Atwater, who lived in the apartment with Andrew Atwater and their mother, allegedly started the fire after an argument with a family member. He has been charged with felony murder, with arson as the underlying offense, and additional charges may follow.

About 25 residents were displaced by the blaze. Six of the injured people were admitted to hospitals, while seven others were treated at the property and later released. Three hospitalized patients were listed in critical condition.

The investigation into the fatal fire remains active as detectives continue gathering evidence.

We extend our sincere condolences to the loved ones of Andrew Atwater and wish a full recovery to everyone injured.

How Fire Investigators Determine the Cause of Apartment Fires

When a deadly apartment fire occurs, investigators carefully examine burn patterns, the fire’s point of origin, and physical evidence left inside the building. They also review witness statements, surveillance footage when available, and any items that may show how the flames started and spread.

In fires that affect multiple apartments, investigators also evaluate how quickly smoke and heat moved through the structure and whether safety systems functioned as intended. Medical findings, photographs, and damage assessments help establish a timeline and explain how occupants were affected. When evidence suggests a fire was intentionally set, investigators work to document every finding before criminal charges are pursued or expanded through the court process.
