Why Bicycle Crashes Near Schools Can Be Especially Dangerous
Roads near schools often experience heavy traffic during late morning and afternoon hours, increasing the chance of conflicts between vehicles and bicyclists. Drivers may encounter pedestrians, cyclists, buses, and turning vehicles in close succession, which can reduce reaction time.
Bicycle riders have far less physical protection than occupants of passenger vehicles, making even moderate-speed crashes on roadways potentially fatal. Investigators commonly review visibility, traffic flow, driver awareness, and bicycle positioning when examining these collisions. Streets near schools may also include driveways, crosswalks, and parked vehicles that can limit sight lines for both motorists and cyclists traveling through the corridor.
