Nederland, CO (July 17, 2026) – A 37-year-old Nederland woman was killed on Wednesday evening after a Dodge Ram pickup truck with a trailer lost control due to brake failure on Colorado 119 near milepost 34, east of Nederland, and struck two westbound vehicles. The crash was reported at approximately 6:30 p.m. on July 15.

The pickup was traveling east when its brakes failed. The trailer began rotating into the westbound lane and struck a Toyota Sienna and a Hyundai Ioniq. The Sienna went off the road and hit a pile of rocks and a mailbox before stopping. The Ioniq was pushed into a rock embankment.

The Ioniq’s driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The Sienna’s driver was taken to a hospital with moderate injuries, and the pickup driver was not hurt. Colorado 119 was closed until approximately 4:15 a.m. The accident remains under investigation.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family of the Nederland woman who lost her life, and we hope the Sienna driver recovers fully.

What Happens When a Truck’s Brakes Fail on a Mountain Highway?

Brake failure on a mountain highway is one of the most dangerous mechanical failures a commercial or heavy-duty truck driver can experience. Descending grades generate significant heat in a braking system, and when that heat exceeds the system’s capacity, or when a mechanical failure removes braking ability entirely, the driver loses the primary tool for controlling speed. On a two-lane mountain road like Colorado 119, where oncoming traffic shares the same pavement with no barrier between lanes, a truck that cannot slow down can cross into opposing traffic within seconds.

Trailers add a layer of instability to a loss-of-control event. When the towing vehicle begins to slow or swerve, a trailer may continue moving at its original speed and direction, causing it to swing outward: a phenomenon known as trailer sway or jackknifing. A rotating trailer entering an oncoming lane has a large and fast-moving profile that gives approaching drivers almost no time to stop or steer clear. The sequence described in this crash, where the trailer rotated into the westbound lane and struck two vehicles before the truck rolled, illustrates how quickly these events escalate.

Colorado’s mountain highways are equipped with runaway truck ramps: long, gravel-filled escape paths designed to stop a vehicle that has lost its brakes before it reaches traffic or a steep descent. These ramps are positioned on specific grades where brake failure is a documented risk. Investigators examining a brake-failure crash typically look at vehicle maintenance records, the driver’s brake inspection history, and the condition of the braking system to determine whether the failure was preventable.
